《五 四运动》
五四运动是指1919年在中国大地上爆发的以学生为主体的反对帝国主义的爱国运动。1919年1月,美、英、法、意、日等27个第一次世界大战的战胜国在法国巴黎召开“和平会议”,中国政府派代表出席会议,并提出废除帝国主义在华特权、取消“二十一条”不平等条约、收回山东主权等正当要求,遭到帝国主义的拒绝。4月底,会议顺从了日本的要求,决定把战前德国在山东的一切权益交给日本,而北洋军阀控制的中国政府竟准备在和约上签字。消息传出,举国愤怒。5月4日下午,北京大学、北京高等师范、朝阳大学、民国大学等13所学校的3000多名学生在天安门前集会,高呼“外争国权,内惩国贼”、“拒绝和约签字”、“废止二十一条”、“誓死争回青岛”等口号,坚决要求严惩亲日派卖国贼曹汝霖(北洋政府交通总长,订立“二十一条”时任外交次长)、陆宗舆(北洋政府币制局总裁,订立“二十一条”时任驻日公使)、章宗祥(驻日公使)。会后爱国学生举行游行示威,大批军警出动进行镇压,逮捕示威学生32人。5日,北京专科以上学校的学生举行总罢课,通电全国表示抗议。6日,北京中等以上学校学生联合会正式成立。北京学生的爱国行动,迅速得到各地学生的声援和社会舆论的支持。北京政府被迫释放被捕学生。但是又逼走了同情学生爱国行动的北京大学校长蔡元培,下令禁止学生干预政治,并恐吓将镇压学生。19日,北京学生又一次宣布总罢课。天津、上海、长沙、广州等地学生纷纷游行,给予声援。在日本、法国的留学生及南洋华侨学生也开展了声援活动。6月1日,北京政府发布命令,表彰被民众斥为卖国贼的曹汝霖、陆宗舆、章宗祥,取缔学生的一切爱国行动。北京学生从3日起重新上街演讲,当天有170多名学生被捕。4日,又有700多学生被捕。5日,2000多名学生上街,遭到军警的马队冲击。北京政府的倒行逆施,激起全国各界人士的愤慨。上海6万多工人在5日自动举行罢工,支持学生的反帝爱国斗争。北京、唐山、汉口、南京、天津、杭州、九江及山东、安徽等地工人,也相继罢工和游行。上海和其他一些城市的商人也举行了罢市。罢课、罢工、罢市斗争扩展到全国20多个省、100多个城市。至10日,北京政府被迫释放被捕学生,撤消曹汝霖、陆宗舆、章宗祥的职务。27日,旅法华工、留学生和华侨数百人前往中国政府总代表驻地,要求拒签和约。28日,中国政府代表终于没有出席巴黎和约的签字仪式。

GOALS (LEARNING OBJECTIVES)
· To advance the four language skills: comprehension, speaking, reading and writing · To foster and enhance the knowledge of essential structures and vocabulary · To enhance the methods of communication in real life situations
- To develop students’ abilities to participate in interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational communication
- To foster a better understanding and appreciation of cultural products and practices and to develop their capacity to reflect on the perspectives that underlie these products
- To enhance their knowledge and new perspectives of the Chinese language
- To foster student’s capacity to take the language beyond the classroom in real-world interactions with native and heritage speakers
- To develop students’ knowledge of all forms and styles of speech pertinent to personal, social, and professional needs tailored to different audiences.
- To advance students social and cultural references and aesthetic norms by processing language from within the cultural framework.
ACADEMIC HONESTY
The Department of Modern Languages and Comparative Literature fully supports Baruch College's policy on Academic Honesty, which states, in part: "Academic dishonesty is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. Cheating, forgery, plagiarism and collusion in dishonest acts undermine the college's educational mission and the students' personal and intellectual growth. Baruch students are expected to bear individual responsibility for their work and to uphold the ideal of academic integrity. Any student who attempts to compromise or devalue the academic process will be sanctioned." Please note that a report of suspected academic dishonesty will be sent to the Dean of Students office.

GRound rules
1. Students must arrive at the class on time and sign in. Four absences and you are dropped from the course. Two lateness equal 1 absence. 2. Your final grade will be reduced by three percentage points for each day you are absent. Absences can be excused only for religious reasons or by presentation of a note from your doctor stating a valid medical cause. 3. If you are tardy more than three times, the instructor will no longer be responsible for including you in drill or answering your question regarding missed lesson in class. 4. Absolutely no make-ups will be given for tests or quizzes. If you are ill with a note from your doctor or observing a religious holidays, you will be excused from test or quiz. 5. Once class begins you will not be able to get up, so take care of all business ahead of time: telephone calls, beeper responses, restroom, etc. 6. Read and follow all the rules and requirements published by Baruch College concerning this course, including if this course is linked to another class. 7. Please buy your own textbooks and other required materials. Don’t borrow textbooks, workbooks, CDs and video tapes from your instructor, whose copies are only used for the whole class and maybe other classes.
Study suggestions
1. Go to lab regularly for at least 30 minutes each week if required. 2. Complete and turn in on time all assigned homework. 3. Be fully prepared before coming to classes. 4. Pay close attention to the standard Mandarin pronunciation 5. Be active in class room discussion
